Twas the night before Xmas, when from west to east
Not a creature was praying, not even a priest.
Religion, tradition… the Canadian Way
Had now been politically corrected away.
While children were up late in front of their screens,
Texting to pedophiles, Tweeting to fiends,
Social workers poised to steal our tikes
To pump up their profits and earn their pay hikes.
The RCMP and the BCTF -
Toadies of sex activists, bullies, the Left -
Tightened their hold on the next generation,
Fending off critics with false allegations.
When out on the lawn there arose such a hollar,
My bear trap had caught a Smart Meter installer.
He filed a Human Rights Complaint right away
Claiming a hate crime because he was gay.
And downtown the junkies shot up in plain sight
Enabled by tax-paid support of Insite,
While vids lauding gay sex unencumbered
Forgot to mention AIDS’ record-high numbers.
I ran out to pick up my local news rag -
Whose stories are cleared by the largest placed ads -
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
A 12 percent tax – HST is still here!
The headlines insisted that everything’s fine
Until I began to read ‘tween the lines
To realize vaccines were an ethical breach
And “bubble zones” burst any hopes of free speech
The Tides Foundation they claim beneficial
By controlling our resources and owning officials.
The riots they claimed were anarchist-driven,
But just punks were charged – the rest were forgiven?
GMO food will feed the whole planet,
And, by the way, ultimately damn it.
Slutwalkers march for their right to dress slutty,
But marching for peace is called outright nutty.
The Supreme Court makes laws with no one’s permission
And free baby-killers and promote sedition.
Voting is passé, and voters called fools,
While indoctrination turns out in schools.
I ran to my house and pulled closed my shutters
And wondered how Canada fell in the gutter.
Well, people are lazy, complacent, and scared,
We cowered to bullies, we dared not to care.
It’s easy to coast, hand reigns to a guide,
Even when Liberty misses the ride.
On Facebook, on Twitter, the web and iPhones;
Hi tech smoke and mirrors, now we are all pwned.
We gave up our freedom, let someone else drive.
We sold out our country, our culture, our lives.
Our Masters now laugh as they call out tonight:
“Happy Xmas to all – thanks for quitting the fight.”

He haunts us still. Gordon Campbell, that is. The former premier may be packing his bags for London, but, for better or worse, he is leaving his tax polices behind.
We all know about the slender thread by which the controversial HST currently hangs. Less well-known but no less significant is Campbell’s carbon tax, which jumped by more than a penny at the beginning of the month and now adds five-and-a-half cents to the cost of every litre of gasoline that motorists buy at the pumps.
Unlike last week’s proposal by Metro Vancouver mayors to levy a two-cent gas tax to help pay for the Evergreen Line, the carbon tax accomplishes little. In fact, it now seems to have been less about improving the province’s environment and more about improving Campbell’s image, so he could cast himself as a Schwarzenegger-worthy green crusader.
While it’s admirable that the B.C. Liberals cut personal and corporate tax rates to offset the extra burden created by the carbon taxes they heaped onto on gasoline and other fuels, the green levies simply aren’t having the effect they were designed to have.
In the key area of automobile usage, for example, the higher pump price caused by the carbon tax was supposed to force B.C. motorists to drive less. But this hasn’t happened, meaning there’s been no benefit to the environment. Instead, British Columbians have simply had to divert more of their income to pay for transportation.
Thanks to Campbell’s machinations, the B.C. Liberal government’s entire energy policy is a mess. He stuck B.C. Hydro with bad deals forcing it to pay astronomical prices for alternative energy, and Hydro’s billion-dollar “smart meter” program is an extravagant and needless exercise in eco-political correctness.
And let’s not forget that, in a misguided desire to see the government become ‘carbon neutral,’ Victoria is forcing public institutions, such as school districts and municipal governments, to buy ‘carbon offsets,’ primarily from private corporations. The Fraser Health Authority, for example, has had to spend almost $1 million on such offsets.
Surely, this money would be better spent in reducing waiting times in the Emergency Room than on a program that amounts to little more than carnival shell game in which the consumer and taxpayer always seem to lose.

FACE TO FACE: Which way will they vote in B.C.’s HST referendum?
There comes a time in some lovers’ quarrels when the aggrieved party’s feelings are so hurt that he or she simply refuses to hear another word, even if that word is an apology, a promise from the offender to make things better or actual evidence of action to set things right.
Welcome to the Great HST Debate.
Understandably, many British Columbians were angered and insulted not only by the manner in which the BC Liberal government introduced the tax but also by the nature of the harmonized sales tax itself.
But many of my fellow taxpayers now seem to be incapable of reversing their opposition to this revenue-generating measure, even though the government has admitted it made many errors in introducing the tax and has taken steps to make things better.
Count my colleague as one of the many provincial taxpayers who is never going to forgive, never going to forget and never going to vote in favour of the HST in this month’s referendum. I suspect his deep-rooted aversion to centrist or centre-right political parties has more than a little to do with his stubbornness.
On the other hand, while I am disinclined to support measures that put the government’s hand deeper into my pocket, I’ve long considered the HST to represent solid fiscal policy and I still believe (as do most economists) that its implementation will lead to more job- and wealth-creation in the province — and that’s good for everyone, consumers and businesses alike.
Now that Finance Minister Kevin Falcon has addressed the tax-paying public’s major concerns about the HST — by promising to phase in a reduction of the tax to 10% from the current 12% and by increasing the corporate income tax rate by 2% — the HST seems to be even more of a win-win.
What’s especially significant is that, under the changes, average British Columbians will enjoy both a short-term benefit (no $350 tax shift) and a long-term one (increased GDP attributable to the efficiencies associated with the HST).
And so I will be voting to preserve the HST.
But if you still have a need to fight against a stupid and destructive revenue-generating measure, take aim at the carbon tax. It deserves to die, sooner rather than later.
