Road Warrior of the Week

Heroes and Good Samaritans

Mar 232013

by Don Spratt

Again today I’m in mourning; because freedom is dying in Canada, and so are her defenders. It began with the Whatcott decision, and now I mourn the loss of one of free speech’s greatest defenders: Douglas Christie, who died March 11.

But what bothers me most is that too few people—too few Christians—seem to notice or care about what it bodes for our future as a nation; few seem to recognize the gathering storm and what it means for coming generations.

Yes, we all want to remain free, but few are willing to pay any real price to ensure that freedom into the future.

doug-christieYet I hope—and fervently pray—that recent events will serve as a wake-up call, warning us that we must stand together, and bring to bear the indispensable political pressure it will take to bring about peaceful political change before it’s too late.

With Mr. Christie’s untimely passing, not only are his loving wife and family left in sorrow, but my good friend and co-defendant Sissy von Dehn is left without her able lawyer. As I watched him defend Sissy (beside my equally dedicated legal council, Ron McDonald), I came to a new appreciation for Mr. Christie—not only as a lawyer, but as a true friend of freedom for all Canadians… not just the politically correct and powerful, who need no protection.

He often laboured at reduced rates or pro-bono for people who could not find or afford legal council. Such was the high value he put on free speech; the right to a fair trial, even for people with unpopular or repugnant ideas with which he might personally disagree.

The Whatcott decision was a direct attack on our God-given, rights to freedom of religion and freedom of expression in the public square—supposedly “guaranteed” Section 2 of The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The specific provisions of the Charter that are supposed to protect individuals from oppressive and tyrannical government measures were again swept aside by the judges, who simply invoked Section 1 to unjustly deny those rights.

The worst part of the decision is the high court’s statement that objective truth is no defence.

The Latin word, Veritas (meaning Truth) is inscribed on monuments and plaques all over the Supreme Court building, but stating the TRUTH is no longer a defence if that truth offends someone, and they haul you before a Human Rights Commission! All it takes is for one thin-skinned, specially-protected person from a government-favoured group to say that his/her feelings are hurt by you stating objective truth, and you’re legal and financial toast!

So, be aware: subjective political correctness and hurt feelings trump the centuries-old values of truth, equal justice before God, and the rule of law in our courts. Even if no one was harmed, it still doesn’t matter!

On top of that, the government—we, the taxpayers—will have to pay for the complainant’s legal council; while the hapless defendant must defend himself, or pay for a lawyer out of his or her own pocket. And if he loses, the defendant can be fined and assessed court costs, which can be financially ruinous.

Equal justice before the law is as dead as an aborted baby!

At the same time all this is going on, Sissy von Dehn and I are still waiting on the BC Court of Appeal for a decision, to find out whether they will uphold our Section 2 Charter rights by overturning lower court decisions that also denied our free speech rights by the abuse of Section 1 of the Charter.

In our case, the court put the act of simply informing the public on a public sidewalk (that they can be arrested within a bubble zone) on the same level as crying “fire” in a crowded theatre when there is no fire.

We are also denied a trial by jury, because these are not Criminal Code cases, and prison time would be below two years if convicted. This, of course, eliminates the possibility of jury nullification—the tactic Henry Morgentaler used to defeat his clear and open defiance of the abortion section of the Criminal Code—and therefore any Common Law common-sense impact of a decision by a jury of our peers.

Everything is stacked against pro-life and pro-family activists.

Sure we have freedom of speech in Canada—but only as long as it isn’t politically incorrect speech, spoken on the public streets or in the public square; and especially not in a “bubble zone” around a government-protected, tax-funded child killing facility!

If we, as free Canadians, don’t soon stand up and demand that our God-given rights be respected, we’ll have to learn to whisper our opinions in hushed tones, and only to our most trusted friends, like my friends in the former Soviet Union, lest they end up in the gulag!

Some might say, “That can’t happen here.” Then why are Linda Gibbons and Mary Wagner repeatedly put in prison? Why am I under probation for passing out copies of government legislation, if our political and legal system is not headed in that direction? Who is next? And who will defend you when all the Doug Christies are gone?

After surviving the Nazi prison camps, German Pastor Martin Niemoller wrote this warning:

First they came for the communists, and I did not speak out,
because I was not a communist;
Then they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out,
because I was not a socialist;
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out,
because I was not a trade unionist;
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out,
because I was not a Jew;
Then they came for me—
and there was no one left to speak out for me.

The loss of Mr. Christie is a loss for free speech in Canada, because few other lawyers will defend the free speech rights of people who hold unpopular views, such as abortion abolitionists. This is especially true in a day and age where the politically correct and powerful can expect the courts to unfairly discriminate against their pro-life and pro-family opponents, under unjust “bubble zone” and “hate speech” laws.

Everything Hitler did had been legalized, too; but it was not just.

Linda Gibbons has recently been released, having served her sentence (over 4 months) in remand. Mary Wagner still languishes in an Ontario prison, this time for over six months.

Where most criminals are given as much slack as possible, and are often quickly back out on the street; peaceful pro-life activists only get added persecution!

Meanwhile, Mary Wagner remains in prison, destitute—with her lawyer, Charles Lugosi, being denied legal aid to defend her. If you want to contribute to Mary’s defence, please send cheques to:
“Charles Lugosi at Law”
107 Wellington Street
Brantford, ON, N3T 2M1

Please write, “Mary Wagner defence” on the memo line.

The “crime” for which Linda has spent more than 10 years in jail, is obeying Jesus commandment to “love your neighbour as yourself,” by peacefully pleading for the lives of innocent, voiceless, defenceless, oppressed and unwanted pre-born babies. Linda and Mary offer a true “choice”, with practical help for girls and women in crisis pregnancies; girls who are often being coerced and almost dragged into abortuaries by partners, and sometimes parents. I’ve witnessed this with my own eyes, feeling helpless because a bubble zone law kept me away, under threat of more prison time.

But Linda perseveres, and more than 100 young women have accepted her practical help, and carried their babies to term. Some of those rescued babies are now having their own babies.

What kind of a perverted legal system would imprison a saint like that, while handing millions of our tax dollars, full police state protection and the Order of Canada to Henry Morgentaler? It is Henry who should be in prison, as he once was! Only a corrupt, politicized, violent and merciless legal system would do that!

How have we forgotten that the first and most fundamental God-ordained purpose for civil government is to protect the innocent and vulnerable, and to punish evil-doers? Today that is turned completely upside down; good is called “evil”, and evil is called “good” in our court system!

Isaiah 5:20-21 says:

What sorrow for those who say that evil is good and good is evil, that dark is light and light is dark, that bitter is sweet and sweet is bitter. What sorrow for those who are wise in their own eyes and think themselves so clever.

The courts get away with inverted justice because, first of all, the biased pro-abortion major media outlets hardly ever report on this injustice! Second, even when we are aware of the injustice inflicted upon Linda and Mary, except for a handful of notable exceptions… we let the authorities get away with it—because we, for the most part, say nothing.

As a prisoner of conscience myself (although doing far less time) I personally know a little bit about what Mary Wagner and Linda Gibbons must feel as they languish in prison for doing the right thing in the face of an unjust law. I know what it is to sit in prison for upholding God’s law, despite a perverted human law that forbids it.

I felt as Martin Luther King did while sitting in jail and remember his words,

In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies but the silence of our friends.

It was also Dr. King who said,

Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.

So today I mourn the loss of freedom, liberty, and justice under the rule of law. I mourn the fact that those like Linda Gibbons and Mary Wagner stand virtually alone, with little moral or financial support beyond the prison system meals, bed and a roof over their heads—all for defending the most innocent and defenceless among us: the 300 pre-born who will die today, and every day until we finally stand up and say “NO MORE!”

And I mourn for Bill Whatcott, who gallantly refuses to stop his witness to the truth and defence of the bedrock of Canadian society: the family! How long until he ends up in prison too, forgotten and alone?

In the end, it is up to us, and no one else! The free ride of freedom, paid for by our forbearers, is over. Further complacency will cost future generations dearly—in injustice, slavery and death.

If the last century taught us anything, it is that appeasement of evil only encourages more evil—until it finally reaches you.

The German church kept “going along to get along” with Hitler and the Nazis in the 1930s, thinking his growing tyranny would not affect them—only to send their boys off in the ’40s to a deadly war that affected every German family and many Canadian families!

Will we learn from this history, or repeat it?

I have a workable plan to stop the child-killing, restore our God-given rights under God and the rule of law—if we, as Christians, and all other Life- and Liberty-lovers, will stand and work together relentlessly before the next federal election, in a non-partisan political campaign behind our long-cherished moral and political principles—a stand that will get the attention of every politician and aspiring politician. Remember: “politicians do not see the light until they feel the heat (electorally and financially)!”

This will not be a cheap or easy win; it will cost us all, in terms of time, money; social, political and media opposition; and even persecution—but it is a price we must pay to remain free. It may cost us some socio-political and economic pain now, but that is much better than the blood, sweat and tears it will cost future generations if they have to rise up in armed revolt or a civil war to regain the God-given freedom, justice and prosperity we are squandering on ourselves.

If you want to join me in the fight for Life and Liberty in Canada; an organized effort to see Linda and Mary released, the repeal of bubble-zone laws, and the restoration of respect for God and the rule of law, let me know what you can contribute in skills, time and finances. See how you can donate financially below.

The funds will be used for FreeLinda and FreeMary web pages and bill-board signs in Ontario. I have a donor for signs in Saskatchewan. The funds will also cover organization, travel and expenses, as well as providing funds to Linda and Mary as needed, in or out of prison. An independent individual will do the bookkeeping. No tax receipts can be issued, but financial supporters will be able to ask for reports.

Please give all you can financially as soon as possible. If I don’t hear from you with tangible support, then there is little I can do on my own, although I’ve tried and have given all I have for 30 years defending the pre-born; and now some 14 years in the courts and prison for defending our God-given Charter rights to freedom of expression and religion, mostly at my own expense. My family and I have sacrificed much for this cause, so I think you can trust me with God’s money. Pray for all of us on the front line, and please join us!

Remember those in prison, as if you were there yourself. Remember also those being mistreated, as if you felt their pain in your own bodies. (Hebrews 13:3) Also read Matthew 25:31-46.

Ask yourself these questions in light of the above Scriptures and of Jesus’ command to “love your neighbour as yourself”:

If you were innocent and defenceless, yet scheduled to be killed tomorrow, merely because you were unwanted, wouldn’t you want somebody to speak in your defence, and even try to rescue you?

If you were unjustly kept in jail for obediently “loving your neighbour as yourself”, wouldn’t you want Christian brothers and sisters to come to your defence and demand your release? Wouldn’t you want them to come to your defence by the thousands, or hundreds of thousands? I would; but it’s never happened. We better change that before it’s too late!

It’s a mixed up muddled up shook up world … ~ The Kinks

Through the secular-”progressive” looking-glass, the term “sexual orientation” has, in a few short years, evolved to accommodate an ever-expanding fruit basket of carnal appetites.

First it was “LGB” – liberal shorthand for “lesbian, gay and bisexual.” Then they added a “T” for “transgender.” That’s cross-dressing. You know, fellas like 45-year-old Clay Francis (aka, “Colleen”).

Mr. Francis enjoys macramé, long walks on the beach, wearing lady’s knickers and showering fully nude with 6-year-old girls.

Because it’s illegal to “discriminate based on the basis of gender identity,” and since it’s the only “tolerant” thing to do, this brave bellwether of the persecuted LGBT victim-class has secured the “civil right” for him and other men to fully expose themselves to your daughter in the locker room at Olympia, Washington’s Evergreen State College.

But slow down, Dad. According to the law, if you have a problem with Mr. Francis baring all to your baby girl, then you’re the problem. You’re a “transphobe” (“homophobia’s” evil twin sister, er, brother … whatever). Deck this sicko for terrifying your first-grader and you’re off to jail while “Colleen” is off to the “Human Rights Campaign” for a commendation as the latest victim of an “anti-LGBT hate crime.”

Rosa Parks in drag, I guess.

But to make sure they didn’t miss anyone, pooh-bahs over at Child Corruption Central added a “Q” to the “sexual orientation” mix. In case some fifth-grader in Ms. Adamsapple’s health class gets the urge to “taste the rainbow” (and I don’t mean Skittles), the catch-all term “questioning” was tacked on.

Gotta meet those recruiting quotas.

According to the “gay” activist group GLSEN, sexuality is “fluid” and “may change over time.” Unless, of course, you’re already “gay,” and then change is impossible, fixed and immutable. Like that hotel in California, “You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave.”

Nobody said it’s supposed to make sense.

Still, because “progressives” aren’t progressive unless they’re progressing toward progress, this nonsensical alphabet soup of sexual deviancy has ballooned to a marvelous “LGBTQQIAAP.”

No kidding.

The latest word salad in the counter-”heterosexist” war against “heteronormativity” (yes, they consider these real things) is “Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning, Queer, Intersex, Asexual, Allies, and Pansexual.”

In Canada, they’ve added “2S” which means: “Two-spirit. The visionaries and healers of aboriginal (sic) communities, the gay and lesbian shamans.”

Well, duh.

I just can’t believe these closed-minded bigots left out members of the mistreated “BDSM” community (Bondage, Discipline, Sadism and Masochism). That’s OK, I guess. Being mistreated is their whole shtick, right? Or maybe they’re covered under “P” for “pansexual.” That means, more or less, that if the mood strikes, you’ll take a roll in the hay with anyone or anything in any way imaginable (or unimaginable).

Speaking of rolls in the hay, don’t put away your alphabet soup decoder ring just yet. It looks like we’ll soon be adding another “B” to the mix.

The late “gay” activist icon Frank Kameny – a pervert before his time – endorsed the practice of bestiality a few years ago. He called sex with animals “harmless,” saying that “as long as the animal doesn’t mind – and the animal rarely does – I don’t mind, and I don’t see why anyone else should.”

So we’ve further lowered the bar from “consenting adults” to “consenting adults and hoofed mammals.” How does that work? Bestiality is OK, but “neigh” means “neigh”?

In today’s frenzied struggle for unfettered sexual license cleverly couched as “civil rights,” we shouldn’t be surprised, then, that oppressed peoples representing all form of “sexual orientation” are lining up for their slice of “equality” pie.

Yes, even, um, animal lovers. According to a recent report by Florida’s Gainesville Sun, for instance, “Lawyers representing a Marion County man accused of sexual activity with a miniature donkey have filed a motion asking a judge to declare the Florida statute banning sexual activities with animals unconstitutional.”

“Carlos R. Romero, 32 … is accused of sexual activities involving animals, a first-degree misdemeanor, after he allegedly was found in a compromising position in August with a female miniature donkey named Doodle.”

First of all, I was offended by the article’s insensitive use of the term “miniature donkey.” I believe, if I’m not mistaken, the preferred nomenclature is “little horse.”

Still, I was especially struck – though not surprised – by the legal arguments Romero’s lawyers ponied up. They claimed “that the statute infringes upon Romero’s due process rights and violates the equal protection clause of the 14th Amendment in the U.S. Constitution.”

“By making sexual conduct with an animal a crime, the statute demeans individuals like Defendant (Romero) by making his private sexual conduct a crime,” they wrote.

Right. The statute demeans Romero.

“The personal morals of the majority, whether based on religion or traditions, cannot be used as a reason to deprive a person of their personal liberties,” the attorneys wrote.

This line of argument is directly from the homosexual activist playbook – the rationale adopted by the majority in the landmark Lawrence v. Texas case. In Lawrence, the U.S. Supreme Court manufactured, for the first time in history, a constitutional “right” for men to sodomize each other.

So why not Doodle?

In his characteristically brilliant dissent, Justice Antonin Scalia forecast exactly what’s happened in the decade since: “State laws against bigamy, same-sex marriage, adult incest, prostitution, masturbation, adultery, fornication, bestiality and obscenity are likewise sustainable only in light of Bowers’ validation of laws based on moral choices,” he wrote. “Every single one of these laws is called into question by today’s decision.”

Predictably, polygamists and incestuous siblings are now clamoring for so-called “marriage equality” based on Lawrence. At this rate, there’s little doubt they’ll get it.

Once our culture decides, as a matter of course, that all morality is relative, all bets are off. Once we determine, as a matter of law, that people are entitled to special privilege because they subjectively define their identity based upon deviant sexual proclivities and behaviors, moral, legal and cultural anarchy are inevitable.

The brave new world is upon us.

The horrific murder of 20 innocent beautiful children plus 6 adults – their teachers, principal and school psychologist – while attending Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, has reignited the calls for gun control. The proponents of gun control, led by the hysterically postulating Piers Morgan on CNN, shamelessly, ignorantly and foolishly fawn over those who would demand us to believe that the only motivating evil that exists in the world today – the only evil that paves the way for this unacceptable bloodshed – is found encased by steel with its chamber loaded.

Blinded by their own stubborn view, they fail to acknowledge or even entertain the possibility of other factors that are proven doorways that allow for this evil to gain entry and mark our communities, our homes, and the lives of our loved ones with loss and fear. Regardless of our feelings about guns, good or bad, steadfast or indifferent, we have a responsibility to consider all the contributing factors that might paint a picture of reality that makes known a more deadly culprit: pharmaceutical drugs. Every parent, every concerned person must watch this video.

The headlines just won’t stop: ‘Take the Fat Kids’…

‘CPS workers remove Obese Kids from their Parents’…

‘Fat Kids need State intervention’…!

OK everyone, it’s time to stop the hatred and contempt of fat folk! It’s time to end the oppression! It’s time for fat to be celebrated, obesity embraced. We’re not gonna take it any more!

It wasn’t that long ago when homosexuality was considered a mental disorder; now it’s time to deal with the fatophobic lies about obesigenetics! If homosexuals can become “gay”, then fatsos must become “jolly”! Fatophobia must END!

We’ll plan our political strategy, using the same tools of deceit and deception so masterfully employed by our comrades-in-arms, the gays! Just as they have succeeded in bullying their way into political stardom now, “Jollies” can, must and will join them in receiving special privileges; we, no less than they (maybe even more, because we’re bigger and our numbers are provably larger!) deserve public and taxpayer recognition—politically, socially and emotionally (not to mention government money—lots of government money!)!

Think of the Jolly jobs we can secure by having Jolly-positive messages mandated in every school, in every subject, at every grade level—to be imposed on every impressionable little mind!

The time is now! This is the Jollies’ “Stonewall” moment! The writing is on the American Psychiatric Association’s wall; the gauntlet was laid down by those hateful Harvard Scholastic sorts, when they published their fear-inducing hate manifesto:

State Intervention in Life-Threatening Childhood Obesity!

They’re now coming for our chubby children! Fatophobia-induced hate and bullying must stop!

We’re going to take the world by storm; we’ll become visible—increasingly visible; and everywhere, people must be taught to talk positively about—and even celebrate—being “Jolly”! The world must embrace the soon to become famous words of Jolly Pride pioneer Mark Shea, “OUT, STOUT & PROUD”!!

We’ll outlaw negative stereotyping—we’ll vilify any dietician or other professional who dares to speak truth about health-related illnesses of obesity; Lady Gaga (the skinny bitch!) was right: we were “born this way”! And for those who dare to suggest Jollies are fat because of their own dietary choices… well, off with their heads! Oops! I mean off to the Human Rights Tribunals for sensitivity training and a lesson in positive Jolly thinking—and possibly a fine. (Yay! More money!)

Here are some of our demands:

  • We want taxpayer funding for an annual Fat Pride Parade in all major (and some minor) cities, featuring that Jolly icon, Santa Claus; the parade should be around Thanksgiving, a time when we can all celebrate overeating. Our expanding waistlines will give new meaning to the phrase “coming out”!
  • CampOut! (the summer indoctrination camp for kids) must be made to feature s’mores, potato chips, and pan-fried everything! And non-diet pop. Lots of pop—Super-Sized POP! Corporate sponsors: Coke, McDonalds, KFC, etc.
  • End Big Pharma’s unconscionable pushing of diet pills!
  • Force students to watch Shallow Hal at school. Promote Hollywood Jolly icons like Jabba the Hutt and Fat Bastard.
  • A big-budget Hollywood remake of Jake and the Fat Man.
  • Boycott Victoria’s Secret until they start carrying—and advertising—a Jolly line of undies called, “Somewhere Under the Roll.”
  • Force Mattel to release a triple-chinned, booty-jiggling Jolly Barbie as a positive role model for not-so-little girls!

We will crush all fatophobics—especially those fanatical exercise gurus! Fatophobes like Jane Fonda will be prohibited from spreading their hate; they must be silenced and those jumpy Jill videos exorcised—I mean burned! But wait there’s more! Those cruel “reparative therapy” groups like Jenny Craig… Weight Watchers… all of them must be shut down! Television shows like the “Biggest Loser” that falsely glorifies the benefits of health and fitness, while perpetrating stereo-typical hate and contempt for jollies, will be banned!

And while we are at it, all reparative therapy, “higher-power”-ed, hokey-pokey phobic groups that deny the reality that we are all “born this way” must be made illegal—groups like the alcophobic Alcoholics Anonymous and narcophobic Narcotics Anonymous. I mean really! Fooling and bullying people into believing that they can change is just so evil! Sure, some people actually do get duped into abstaining from drugs, smoking, alcohol—some even lose weight and then start preaching fatophobic hate messages! But what about the ones who don’t? Is it fair to them? Shouldn’t they be encouraged in their “born-this-way” expressions of sex, drug, drink, tobacco and metabolism uniqueness?

It’s essential that all “Jollies” and their allies adopt the rabid rhetoric and employ the strategic emotional marketing schemes that have been proven so successful by our friends, the “gays”! We must learn to repeat the standard lies/lines: “Who would ever choose to be this way? Teased and bullied, mocked and reviled.” “I’m born this way! I can’t change!” “And I don’t wanna change!”

Yes! Schools must draft anti-fatophobia policies. Nutrition and similar science studies must now feature the benefits of starchy carbohydrates, the need to celebrate copious amounts of white sugar, liberate fried (notice how close this word is to “friend”?) foods from the dark references of being “junk”! Fatty, rich indulgences that provide meaningful comfort and acceptance must be available in every school cafeteria, and from every food dispensing machine. Flags featuring poutine and rainbow-coloured bon-bons must fly over every school and city hall!

Professionals must acknowledge that emotional trauma, pain, sexual abuse and other psychological realities associated with known food consumption behaviours cannot be talked about, for such realities perpetuate the myth that there might be factors other than “I was born this way” and/or “God made me this way”, that have contributed to my generous genetic presence!

Our brothers and sisters (and whoever/whatever else is defined in the gay+++ community) would never tolerate such a truthful and open-dialogue parading of the many life-threatening illnesses associated with their “born-this-way” sexual practices! Why should we? Jollies must mobilize to express resistance and demand redress! This is HATE!!!!!!

Health talk = Hate speech! Don’t let anyone forget it!

Only 3% of Canadians are Gay, but 60% of Canadians are overweight; therefore Jollies deserve a bigger piece of the special-interest pie! Did someone say “PIE”!?!

We need Human Rights Legislation to end fatophobic discrimination, and we demand that governments pay more for our growing (hmmm!) needs, and not restrict funding based on fatophobic funding formulas that attempt to “normalize” caloric intakes. Jollies who can’t work because of their “born this way” health challenges must be given increases in their welfare payments to recognize and celebrate their greater caloric needs. There is no normal!

Besides welfare rate increases, subsidized medical costs and subsidized life insurance must be made available to help us celebrate our rightful and ever-increasingly visible place in society!

Fatophobic rhetoric must be outlawed! Dr. Oz and other alleged medical professionals must be censored (and censured) to stop them from spreading hateful fatophobic lies and zealotry about heart disease, diabetes and other health concerns that they claim are related to measurable body fat! That’s just fatophobic hate speech!

Oprah, the world’s most respected woman, has proven time and again that if one is meant to be fat, he or she will be fat—despite all the diets and money available.

Fatophobic slurs like “Eat an apple”, “Healthy Foods, Healthy Choices”, and “Fit for life” must be bullied into silence! Never again must such words be allowed to echo their hateful messages in school classrooms, cafeterias and hallways!

Jolly-positive posters that celebrate fat diversity must decorate school halls! “Fatasstic!” “All you need is Kripsy Kreme!” “Bubble Buns are Beautiful!” “Eat and be Jolly!” These slogans are acceptable!

The public (and private) schools are our most important tool! Administrators must be made to recognize that there is far more bullying happening to generous-sized, “born-this-way” children than any other kind! Not to take away from the false statistics that have been so instrumental in aiding the duping of the silly classes by our comrades the gays; but, really: fatophobia is a far greater problem!

It’s essential that all students become familiar with and celebrate Fatasstic people! Now, some parents (and a few health professionals) might say that all this positive reinforcement about being fat risks causing children to indulge in the lifestyle! That’s the typical hateful fatophobic response; but we all know “You can’t make a child fat who wasn’t born that way!”

Schools must all celebrate a “Day Against Fatophobia”, when kids will feast on fat-laden and MSG-filled fast foods: french fries, poutine, donuts, sugary drinks, pop… lots of soda pop! Maybe we could combine the politics of the gay “Day of Silence” with our special day, with the motto: “Don’t Hate, just EAT”!

Yes, Fatasstic people have lots to do. A real attention-getter will be to start a petition to help Richard Simmons and Jennifer Hudson free themselves from the bondage of the diet-crazed fatophobes, and return to their true life of generous, sizable, cute and jiggly proportions.

I’m certain that our gay comrades will embrace us as we ride their coat-tails to success. They know it works; just look at how they piggybacked their message onto the civil rights movement!

We should be thankful that most people don’t know how to think! And the schools must not be allowed to teach students how to think; only what to think. Yes, we will rely on the political strategies developed by homosexual activists to demean, defame, and destroy anyone who would dare suggest that there are medical and health consequences to our choice of Jolly behaviour! Oops! I mean “being born this way”, and unalterable genetic make-up.

Be the way you were born to be! Eat lots, drink more and be gay! Or Jolly.

For Canada Day – which used to be (and should still be) called ‘Dominion Day’* – Vancouver Sun religion columnist Doug Todd listed his suggestions for ten “Canadian values”:

  1. Participatory democracy.
  2. Reasonable tolerance of diversity.
  3. The rule of law.
  4. Stewardship of the Earth.
  5. No discrimination, including on gender or sexual orientation.
  6. Mixed economics: Market enterprise tempered by regulation.
  7. Universal health care for core needs.
  8. Readiness to pay taxes.
  9. Willingness to learn from “The Other.”
  10. Commitment to the common good.

I’d like to respond with a list of my own; that way, perhaps we can get a discussion going. But first, I need to establish some principles – principles are more enduring and immutable than “values”; values are merely what we ascribe value to, at the moment, and can change in an eye-blink; principles, like the laws of physics, don’t change. Ever.

Here are some principles for public life (which is what governments and politics are all about). Personal values and principles are just as important – maybe more important – but we’re talking about nationhood, here. Ultimately, the nation will assume a shape determined by the interplay of individual principles.

First of all, however, I have to confess that I have an advantage over poor Doug: my position doesn’t compel me to treat all faiths as though they were equal. And, indeed, that’s not possible: Judaism and Christianity and Islam say there’s only one God; Hinduism says there’s millions; Buddhism has no god. One = millions = zero is a logical absurdity. Some other tome, I’ll deal with why I’ve staked my eternal future on the Biblical faith; but for now, let’s get on with the national list of values principles.

Behind the principles that govern a nation’s identity must be a concept of governance. Ultimately, any form of government ending in “archy” or “cracy” isn’t really reliable; they depend on the personal integrity of the ruling authority. A monarchy depends on the monarch; a democracy depends on the people; a republic depends on both the Constitution (is it a good one?) and the people (will the people obey it?) Remember that Hitler came to power through a populist democracy; in the Messianic Age we’ll be governed by an absolute Monarch.

But the first principles of government must always derive from the concept of authority: what authority does a government have? and where does it come from?

There is – and always has been – only one Law-Giver; governments are not instituted to make laws, but to administer the Laws that have been given (at Sinai). William Blackstone, whose Commentaries on the English Law were for 200 years the primary textbook of every law school in the English-speaking world, wrote that “no enactment of man can be considered a law unless it accords with the Law of God.”

So, since we have passed statutes that are at variance with the Torah, those ideas cannot be considered part of our heritage. But other innovations, such as the idea that we will not allow anyone to perish for lack of medical care or funds, are consistent with that part of the Torah that commands us to, “Love your neighbour as yourself.”

So what are the guiding principles that should keep Canada on the right path?

  1. Obey the Law (that is, what is consistent with God’s Law).
  2. Be generous (personally; not with other people’s money).
  3. Be compassionate.
  4. Love people and use things (too much of modern life loves things, and therefore uses people).
  5. Work hard and joyfully – and for the future, more than for the present.
  6. Leave Canada and the world in a better state than we received it.
  7. Rejoice in what we have been given; do not make the ability to be happy conditional on things unattained or imagined.
  8. Respect the legitimate rights of others; defend your own legitimate rights (and know the difference between legitimate rights and indulgence).
  9. Speak the truth in love.
  10. Be honest in all your dealings; do not covet nor take what is not yours.

For comparison’s sake, let’s discuss Doug Todd’s Ten:
    1. Participatory democracy.
But democracy must not be idolized; it is always in danger of degenerating into mob rule, if we put it on a pedestal. When I was in school, we were taught that democracy meant rule by the majority, but stressed that the first obligation of the majority is to protect the rights of the minorities.

The only reason to defend democracy, really, is the knowledge that no fallen man or woman can be trusted with absolute power; therefore everyone in authority must be accountable to those under his or her authority.

    2. Reasonable tolerance of diversity.
The operative word here is “reasonable”; we have fallen into the worship of a special brand of “diversity”, the hall-mark of which is intolerance for anyone who disagrees with it. The modern brand of “diversity” has no room for people who agree with Blackstone.

    3. The rule of law.
The importance in this dictum is that it supersedes rule by persons.

    4. Stewardship of the Earth.
A principle with which all (except the rapacious) can agree – it’s consistent with our Point #6.

    5. No discrimination, including on gender or sexual orientation.
This idea, so prevalent today, is rooted in a misunderstanding of the word “discrimination”. It was once though to be the hallmark of civility to be discriminating – to have cultivated the ability to distinguish between what is good and what is bad, and to choose the good, whether doing so is of immediate personal benefit or not. We must restore the proper meaning of, and respect for “discrimination”. The word acquired a bad connotation when “discrimination based on race” was recognized as a social evil. But many forms of discrimination are good, and should be honoured.

    6. Mixed economics: Market enterprise tempered by regulation.
The use of the word “tempered” tells me that Doug recognizes the evil implicit in both unrestrained avarice and unconstrained regulatory power. We would surely all agree.

    7. Universal health care for core needs.
This is an expression of our Point #3, and is dependent on the limiting words “core needs”; but the socialist principle that prevents anyone from spending their money on any kind of health care, if it is not also available to all others, is excessively bureaucratic. And it must be recognized that abortion is never a “need”; it is the abuse of one person for the benefit of another; in this, it is akin to slavery and to the sacrifice of children to Moloch.

    8. Readiness to pay taxes.
It’s a pity that Doug didn’t see fit to insert a modifying word here – like “reasonable taxes”. Christian economist Gary North has pointed out that when the government demands more than the ten percent that is God’s tithe, it has straying into idolatry.

    9. Willingness to learn from “The Other.”
Yes; but there must be a standard against which everything we would learn must be measured. That standard is the Torah.

    10. Commitment to the common good.
No quarrel here at all; but again, there must be a standard for defining “good”; we cannot hope to make the world “better” until we know what is meant by “good”. And again, that has been defined for us by the Creator.

* – A word about the word “Dominion”, as in “Dominion of Canada” and “Dominion Day”: As a teenager, I though the term meant that Canadians were under the thumb of Britain. I learned from the study of history that the Fathers or Confederation chose the term from the eighth verse of the 72nd Psalm: “He (meaning the returned Messiah) shall have dominion from sea to sea, and from the great river to the ends of the earth.” Respect for His Torah, the foundation of all legitimate law, is implied in calling our nation a Dominion; and the term deserves to be restored.

By Terry O’Neill in The National Post Jun 23, 2011

It has been a good week to be a psychologist, criminologist or sociologist in B.C., as quote-seeking reporters and columnists scoured the academic countryside looking for insights, observations, theories, explanations and opinions about all things to do with Vancouver’s Stanley Cup riot. Disappointingly, however, their responses invariably fell short of being truly illuminating.

Even some of the rioters and looters themselves have turned to the usual lineup of deep thinkers to help them explain why they did what they did during that infamous night.

This, in fact, is exactly the strategy one university student embraced in a now-notorious essay she posted online in an attempt to apologize for her looting of a men’s wear store. Parroting many of the experts — and, indeed, actually quoting a few of them — Camille Cacnio described how an allegedly conscience-numbing combination of alcohol and adrenaline caused her to steal two pairs of pants, which she said she took as souvenirs of the evening’s events.

As noted in Wednesday’s National Post, Cacnio’s original, 3,000-word-long mea culpa declared, “I had no intentions of defiling the city … But in my immature, intoxicated perspective all I saw was that the riot was happening, and would continue happening with or without me, so I might as well get my adrenaline fix.”

Statements like that led many online critics to blast Cacnio for attempting to rationalize or even justify her actions, and she subsequently posted a far-shorter, more straightforward apology in response.

Nevertheless, her original tract remains accessible. This is undoubtedly good news for students of human nature, because the document provides some important insights into the destructive riot and, in doing so, also inadvertently rebuts facile rationalizations about its causes.

Facile, because a great many experts, such as Christopher Schneider, an assistant professor of sociology at the University of British Columbia (who was, in fact, quoted by Cacnio), concentrated their ruminations on explanations relating to “mob mentality.”

Regrettably, however, few ventured into the more complex and potentially more revealing territory of personal conscience and responsibility. This omission inevitably led casual observers to conclude that many of the rioters were little more than biological machines that reacted in strange and dangerous ways to the stimuli of the night: the bitter disappointment or anger over the Canucks’ game seven loss, the booze and the adrenaline.

Insights and observations about the role of free will, individual choice and ethical action were difficult to find, even though it is clear that a great many fans, who were subjected to exactly the same stimuli as Cacnio and the other rioters and looters, did not join the mayhem.

What could explain dissimilar responses to similar stimuli? Ironically, Cacnio herself provides a clue in a passage in which she attempts to persuade the reader that she is a “good person.”

She writes: “As many of you already know, I am majoring in Conservation Biology at UBC. I strongly believe in ecological conservation and sustainability. That night [the night of the riot], I saw a few people that were trying to knock trees down. So what did I do? I yelled at them, saying ‘Pleaaseee [sic], not the trees!!!!’ And what did they do? They stopped. And I felt like a hero.”

What Cacnio is telling us, then, is that, on a night in which she says she was so jumped up with adrenaline and booze that she found looting a store to be a perfectly rational thing to do, she was also morally aware and clear-headed enough to put her love of the natural world into action by saving some trees.

Something doesn’t add up. She can’t have it both ways, just as the experts’ musing about the effects of stimuli on the rioters doesn’t explain how the same stimuli can leave so many people unaffected.

Clearly, there’s an element missing in Cacnio’s self-analysis and the experts’ cogitations, and that’s the role that one’s moral standards play in determining one’s actions. Cacnio’s strong convictions relating to the environment allowed her to overcome the otherwise conscience-numbing effects of the evening’s stimuli and to make the “right” decision about saving trees.

Similarly, it can be speculated that the majority of the fans were able to resist the temptation to join in the mayhem because of their moral convictions about such things as responsible action and the value of personal property. Conversely, it can also be said that those with less-well-formed moral character succumbed to the stimuli.

Ultimately, then, participation in the riot was a matter of free will. Some chose to do evil. Thankfully, however, a great many chose to do good.

Here is a brief interview by PA-PA.ca of Kevin and Magda of Salmon Arm, BC, and their volunteer advocate Starr-Ella. Kevin and Magda have now had two infants stolen from them.

British Columbia’s Ministry of Children and Family Development has an ongoing practice of falsifying evidence in order to justify the removal of infants and children from loving families. For each child abducted into their system, the Ministry bills the government approximately $90,000 each year. Their motive is obvious. Their tactics are evil. They answer to no-one.

Does anyone other than a dwindling minority of Procrustean traditionalists recognize evil anymore—personal evil, that is? Oh, sure, there’s plenty of the geopolitical variety to go around these days, especially in North Africa. And there’s more than enough being identified on the national stage by perpetually outraged critics within this country too, most notably by those on the political left, who eagerly attach the E word to everything from corporate profits and free trade to the oil sands and Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s piano playing.

But we rarely hear about individual Canadians doing “bad” things, exhibiting sinister behavior, acting wickedly, or carrying on immorally, let alone sinning.

Instead, there’s always some sort of exculpating explanation for bad behaviour. Shoplifters suffer from kleptomania; corrupt officials have succumbed to stress or have manifested a previously undiagnosed psychiatric disorder; prostitutes are victims of the patriarchy, poverty or both; juvenile delinquents are the recipients of inadequate parenting; inner-city gangsters are victims of racial discrimination; and thieves are impoverished or addicted, and, if the latter, are surely not responsible for the burden of the illness under which they are labouring. You get the picture.

Look at the website promoting the recent Pink Shirt Day/anti-bullying campaign—a cause that should easily give rise to descriptions of bullies acting wickedly, etc.—and you’ll see therapeutic twaddle aplenty along with much vigorous exhortation to get to the root of the problem, etc., but nothing about the plain and simple fact bullies are acting immorally.

Which brings me to Exhibit A, otherwise known as the spark that gave life to this particular column. You might have heard of a horrible hit-and-run accident in Coquitlam, B.C., two weeks ago which left two young women dead. In covering the aftermath of the crash, which included the laying of several charges against a suspect, including two counts of impaired driving causing death, a local newspaper turned to a clinical psychologist from Simon Fraser University for some “insight” into “what might lead someone to flee the scene” of a serious accident without giving help.

Dr. Joti Samra is quoted thusly: “Assuming that it’s a true accident, the reality is… even from the perspective of the person that caused the accident, it can be quite traumatic and cause an acute stress reaction.” Got that? Acute stress reaction.

The good doctor goes on to explain that the brain could be flooded with information and emotion that would cause a person to act unusually. “The fight or flight response is something we’re exposed to when we are faced with extreme traumatic events,” Dr. Samra concludes. “Our body kind of goes into a shock, it doesn’t know what to do.”

Notice the focus on the culprit’s body and not his mind? I suppose it’s true that this human-as-hormonal-machine answer is what you’d expect from a clinical psychologist, whose business, of course, is to produce exactly this sort of pseudo-scientific analysis. But there’s no excuse for the news media to limit their probing into human behaviour to “experts” such as Dr. Samra. Why not someone with some grasp of the profundity of human existence, someone like a novelist, a moral philosopher or a religious leader– someone who recognizes we’re more than just pre-programmed biological machines?

To my mind, it would be a welcome relief—and far more enlightening—to hear some real insights into moral character, the dark origins of personal cowardice, or the nature of evil in circumstances such as these. And so, for example, when asked why a driver might flee the scene of an accident in which he had struck two innocent people, a priest might comment that such a person had become alienated from God, had too easily succumbed to temptation, and had become a sinner in need of redemption.

This would be really useful information as far as I’m concerned, and might also help many readers reflect more deeply on their responsibility—indeed, their duty—to act in a moral fashion.

But, of course, in this secular, humanistic era of ours, we see very little serious discussion about evil in the public square. Perversely, one is more likely to find scintillatingly descriptive words, purring about the concept of evil, in advertisements attempting to induce a consumer to indulge in some sort of deliciously sinful wickedness for an affordable price. Moral inversion to sell chocolate pudding.

A recent full-page newspaper advertisement for Volvo is a perfect example of this lamentable trend. Emblazoned above an image of a shiny red S60 model, the ad copy informs us, “There’s more to life than a Volvo. Like raising a little hell with 300 horses, spanking corners with your all-new sport-tuned chassis. And feeling a little dangerous in a car tricked out with safety technology. That’s why you drive the all-new naughty Volvo S60.” (Emphasis added.)

A 16th-Century proverb holds, “Evil doers are evil dreaders.” Today, however, evil doers are either the next patient for the couch or a target market.
