On the Scale: Elephants Have Long Memories
Old sayings such as “An elephant never forgets” and “He has the memory of an elephant” refer to the common bleief that elephants have long and detailed memories.
Veracity Weight: HEAVY. After humans and apes, elephants have the best measured memory on the planet, with dolphins coming in a close fourth place. Elephants have huge brains, of course, which are denser and have more folds – all earmarks of greater memory retention. Elephants can remember as many as 200 individuals and recall them instantly after many years.
